Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah is an American musician and rapper. Her work as a music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has won an impressive two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won a Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. Her parents are Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple divorced when Latifah aged 10 years old. Latifah was a student at a Catholic school and received her education in Newark New Jersey. She attended the Baptist church. In her early twenties when her mother gave her the stage name Latifah, which means tender and gentle in Arabic. Latifah, a 5'10" tall power forward for the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. The song she sang was"Home" from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah became a beatboxer for the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah became a member of the original Flavor Unit group that included several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music, who worked for Latifah at the time and was awed by the song. In 1988 she released Wrath of My Madness as the first single by Latifah.
